Places of Interest in Mauritius-Travel
Guide
While a
Mauritius Island Vacation is known for beautiful
beaches, breathtaking sunsets and great sun and fun,
there other, less well known, places to visit on
Mauritius.
The most densely populated area of the island is Port
Louis, the capital city. In colonial times it was known
as the "Star and the Key of the Indian Ocean". You will
find history filled museums from several eras of
settlement. The Dutch, the french, and the British eras
will all be represented and preserved in the likes of
the Natural History Museum, The Windmill Museum, The
blue Penny Museum and the Mauritius Postal Museum. Each
of these will show the past and the transitions to the
present from their own perspectives. An interesting
journey in to the locals traditions and current
lifestyles.
10 kilometers North of Port Louis is the Pamplemousses
Botanical Garden. It was constructed on 60 acres of land
by Piere Poivre. It is quite the museum in itself with
exhibits from all over. Waterlillies from the Amazon
region of S America, Tortoises from many tropical
islands and plants and animals from all over the region.
Black River, in the West of Mauritius, is home to the
Casela Bird and Nature Park. It is the proud domicile of
the Pink Pigeon, which was near extinction, and birds
from many other countries as well. In addition to the
aviary, it houses a zoo as well, with representative
examples of many species you might expect. You will even
have the opportunity to fish for tilapia from park
ponds. What a thrill for the kids! Bikes and quad bikes
are available to self explore the rest of the nature
park and discover it upon your own with the family.
A journey to Riviere des Anguilles will take you to the
La Vanille Crocodile Park. As the name implies, the
stars of the show are Nile crocodiles, but they also
have tortoises wandering about, wild boars, monkeys and
bats.
Another nature park is located at Chamouny and is called
La Vallee des Couleurs Nature Park. Chamarel colored
earth, which is beautiful multicolored volcanic rock and
earth with a gorgeous waterfalls is the main attraction.
