Mauritius Island - The Capital,
Port-Louis
Port Louis is the capital city of Mauritius Island. The
overall island is about 790 Square Miles and has a
population, as of 2006, of 1,241,000. Of which, 148,000
are residents of Port Louis. Over 80% of the population usually speak Creole, a
derivative of French. 1% of the population speak
English, but it is widely understood. The remaining
population speak either a purer French or Bhojpuri (a
very popular regional language spoken in parts of
north-central and eastern India).
Most of the people are Indo-Mauritian at about 68%,
another 26percent are Creole, 2 percent are
Franco-Mauritian, and an equal number, Sino-Mauritian.
This multiracial population gets along very well
together. As with such a population split, there are
also religious splits. 49 percent are reported to be
Hindu and about 25 percent are Roman Catholic. Roughly
17 percent practice Islamic forms of religion.
As with most groups of people in this demographic mix
and culturally affluent, the literacy rate in Mauritius
is reportedly high at 86 percent.
About 1/2 of the Mauritius Island population is part of
the work force, large percentages of which are employed
in construction, services, trades, agriculture and
fishing.
Gross income of exports in Mauritius total $1.949
Billion as of 2005. The major exports consisting of
textiles and clothing, sugar, cut flowers and some
molasses.
Gross imports for that year amounted to $ 2.507 billion.
Consisting primarily of manufactured goods, capital
equipments, foodstuffs, petroleum products and
chemicals. As might be predictable of an island economy.
Most imports originate in the countries of UK, France,
U.S., Madagascar, Italy, South Africa, China, India,
Bahrain, Japan.
Surprisingly, there is no railroad in country. But
almost 99% of the 1926 kilometers of roads are paved.
Including 44 kilometers of expressways and multilane
highways. It may seem small, but remember, this is an
island of less than 800 square miles.
