Mauritius
1. Mauritius Island is located off the African Coast, in
the South-West corner of the Indian Ocean.
2. Mauritius Island is a mountainous land of about 1900
square km with 330 kms of coastline surrounded largely
by coral reefs. And 140 kms of the coastline is sandy
beach.
3. Mauritius Island is famous for being the only native
home of the dodo bird. Europeans introduced the pigs,
rats, feral dogs, and even monkeys. The Dodo Bird was
made extinct in the 17th century largely from hunting
pressure.
4. The island was well known to Malay and Arab sailors
as early as the 10th century. The western world, lead by
the Portuguese, first explored Mauritius in about 1505.
5. The British captured the island in 1810.
6. In 1814 the Island of Mauritius was ceded to Great
Britain along with its dependencies by the Treaty of
Paris.
7. Independence was attained from the Dutch, French, and
British in 1968.
8. The Government of Mauritius broke ties formally with
the British Crown in March 1992, and they became a
republic within the Commonwealth.
9. Mauritius Island has earned one of Africa's highest
per capita incomes, and has attracted considerable
foreign investment.
10. In Oct. 2003, the first non-Hindu in the history of
the Island of Mauritius, Paul Berenger, a white
Mauritian of French ancestry, became prime minister.
